Re: Holton Llewellyn Model Bb/A Trumpet s/n 104,XXX

Instrument Identification and Description

This medium-large bore (.459 ") Llewellyn Model Bb/A trumpet was manufactured by Frank Holton and Company in Elkhorn Wisconsin in 1929.

This finish of this trumpet is original unrestored satin silver plate with gold wash inside of the bell flair. The plating is 98% intact. There are no dents, 1 ding in the mouthpiece receiver, and a few tiny dings in the bell flair. The overall condition is excellent, both cosmetically and mechanically. The fingerbuttons have mother of pearl inserts in excellent condition.

The receiver is marked LP for low pitch. There is a patent date mark on the top tube of the main tuning slide which reads "Pat. Oct 21, 1924" and applies to the Bb/A change stop mechanism. The right sides of the individual valve casings are marked 1, 2, 3, and the left side of the 2nd casing is stamped with Frank Holton & Co, Elkhorn Wis. and the serial number, 104XXX. The bell flair is engraved with a floral pattern surrounding the makers mark which reads LLEWELLYN MODEL; MADE BY; Frank Holton and Co.; ELKHORN; WIS.

The instrument is in the original case, which is in good condition. It has all of its original parts and accessories. The most valuable of these are 2 circa 1929 silver plated Frank Holton Heim Model mouthpieces, a #1 and a #2, both in very good original condition. These are worth $100 each. Also present and in excellent condition are both the factory lyre and clamp-on lyre holder.
